This is a song about the sadness and self-deprecating tendancy that
having a job you despise is likely to feel like. Everyone has a
different notion of what, or who, the grim reaper really is - from
the Helenistic times until now, where the typical views of catholocism
have come to dominate the stereotype of this person, the regards are
usually macabre, evil, and insidious.
My personal reflections upon the role account of a 'grim reaper' during
my high school years were more empathetic - If I was to bestow a
personality to this phenomenon, I found that I genuinely felt sorry for
this entity that existed solely to announce the end of a living thing.
There is a certain amount of morbid sarcasm exhibited by our character
below. Yet the dead (No pun intended) giveaway is the line where he quite
litterally tells us that he is sad "I have not the eyes to shed a tear for
you, but even so, I'm really blue."
The dark nature of a spectre was, I think, created by Catholocism, and has
permeated the myth surrounding exactly what, and why, there has to be such
a phenomenon as a 'grim reaper'.
The most interesting thing about the Grim Reaper is that meeting him/it, is
inevitable. On this point agnostics, atheists, and folowers of religious orthodoxy
should be able to agree. But if they can't it's of no consequence anyway, since
The Grim Reaper calls eventually upon all living things, whether they be a
sensient being or not, whether they deny the inevitability of the phenomenon
or not, whether they believe or not - as the Grim Reaper says, "It always ends
the same".
I quite litterally cried for this 'person' while performing the song on stage
several times, as I really felt for him and his desperation - while at the
same time I think I was shedding the tear for the little bunny rabbit that he
didn't have the tears for. The Grim Reapers lack of ability to bestow mercy
upon a creature should, in my mind, not take away from his desire to show it.
I hope you can feel sorry for him too.

Yeah!
Oh, We gonna get you in the end....
I'm what make
The people run
In infantile fear
They'll curse me down
They'll damn their souls
Oh just so they can't hear
The people I've claimed before are millions-fold
And I don't care, or so I'm told
I'm what make people run in infantile fear
Yeah, alright - nobody escapes here
Nobody!
You hear me?
The souls I take
Before they wake
Escape the grief and pain
And though I'd like
To spare a few
It always ends the same
I have not the eyes to shed a tear for you
But even so, I'm really blue...
I'm what make people run in infantile fear
It doesn't even matter
Not even if you dare
I'm gonna find you anyway
So don't try to cheat it
It's never-ever any different
I'm gonna find you any day
Within my hourglass your lives are but granules of sand
You're just a moment that resides in the palm of my hand
Well...
It's been, a long time
It's been, a long time...
And those who try
To steal their fates
Are blind and cannot see
For I'm the one
The only one
You're ever *sure* to meet
The people I've claimed across the Universe
And if'n you die, it's by my curse
I'm what make people run, in infantile fear
It doesn't even matter
Not even if you dare
I'm gonna find you anyway
So don't try to cheat it
It's never-ever any different
I'm gonna find you any day
Within my hourglass your lives are but granules of sand
You're just a moment that resides in the palm of my hand
Well...
It's been, a long time
It's been, a long time...
[and he laughs aloud, albeit sadly, for he cannot bestow mercy
upon any living thing, and is eternally indentured to perform
this duty no matter how repugnant his finds himself]
It doesn't even matter!!!
Not even if you dare
I'm gonna find you anyway
So don't try to cheat it
It's never-ever any different
I'm gonna find you any day
Within my hourglass your lives are but granules of sand
You're just a moment that resides in the palm of my hand
Well...
It's been, a long time
It's been, a long time...
[he turns, moving away off into oblivion...]
